Don't take chances. Comply with the 2013 NFPA 505 to reduce the risk of fire or explosion hazards.

Fires involving powered industrial trucks can cause loss of life and assets, as well as damage to premises. Mitigate potential dangers by following the rules in NFPA 505: Fire Safety Standard for Powered Industrial Trucks Including Type Designations, Areas of Use, Conversions, Maintenance, and Operations. This important Standard applies to fork trucks, tractors, platform lift trucks, motorized hand trucks, and other specialized industrial trucks powered by electric motors or internal combustion engines.

This document provides comprehensive fire safety guidance for powered industrial trucks with coverage of:

  • Hazardous (classified) locations
  • Dual-fuel trucks
  • Conversion of trucks
  • Maintenance
  • Fuel recharging
  • Marking and operation
  • Portable fire extinguishers

New and revised requirements for compressed gaseous hydrogen (Type CGH) industrial trucks in the 2013 NFPA 505 include:

  • New definition for Type Designation CGH
  • Inclusion of Type CGH trucks in sections where Type E already exists. (The Type CGH truck is intended for use only in Type E environments at this time.)
  • Clarification of where CGH trucks can and cannot be used
  • Revised requirement involving conversion to CGH
  • Separation of refueling requirements into two paragraphs for CNG and CGH
  • New text on changing Type CGH battery replacement modules

The 2013 edition also updates references to NFPA codes and standards as well as other organizations' documents.
