Full Description

Scope

This guide applies to mineral-oil-immersed transformers and addresses: 1. The theory of combustible gas generation in a transformer; 2. The interpretation of gas analysis; 3. Suggested operating procedures; 4. Various diagnostic techniques, such as key gases, Dornenberg and Rogers ratios; Duval triangle; and other methods; 5. Instruments for detecting and determining the amount of combustible gases present; 6. Case studies; 7. Evaluation criteria and guidelines; 8. A bibliography of related literature.

Purpose

The purpose of this document is to provide a Guide for evaluating transformer condition using analytical tools and methods involving transformer mineral oil and associated developed gases.

Abstract

Revision Standard - Superseded. Detailed procedures for interpreting Dissolved Gas Analysis results are described. The document details: 1) Overview of gas generation in transformer and DGA process. 2) The purpose and application of DGA. 3) DGA quality verification and DGA limitations. 5) DGA interpretation and norms. 6) Fault type definitions and identification. 7) Case studies and interpretation example. The intent is to provide the operator with useful information concerning the serviceability of the equipment. An extensive bibliography on gas evolution, detection, and interpretation is included.
