Full Description

The research paper investigates an existing energy problem in a district cooling plant in Egypt as the price of Electricity kw hour is high which affected the price of the ton refrigerant produced by the district cooling plant to be sold to all the buildings of the district cooling area.

The cooling towers fans with their pumps of the district cooling plant consumes more than 40 % the total annual energy of the plant than using geothermal systems, also the type of chillers in the plant were all absorptions chillers which consumes 4.5 gpm per ton , which results to huge water consumption and large size of pumps.

Measuring points was taken for the lake and was validated by Ansys. CFD for the surface temperature to propose the geo heat pump system. The research investigates and get use of the existence of the artificial lake pond near the plant which already used of irrigation, and studies the average temperature profile of the surface temperature of the lake by replacing the cooling towers with horizontal open loop system using slinky coil type The methodology of the above problem were carried by Energy modeling HAP software with the following scenarios:

  • Modeling Absorption 2500 TR plant, chiller with chilled water pumps, condenser pumps, and cooling towers showing the KW.HR consumptions
  • Modeling 2500 TR total for DX ground source water cooled package units.

The results of the above scenarios show that the total energy consumption with the use of the ground heat pumps of the artificial lake is less with 40% than using cooling towers, moreover the cost of the cooling towers renovations are eliminated, and all the chilled water piping and pumps are eliminated by the DX Ground heat pump system, moreover the Ground heat pump condenser consumption 2.6 gpm per ton vs. 4.2-4.5 gpm per ton for the absorption chiller per ton in addition the water consumption from the cooling tower that would be eliminated.
