This chapter addresses commercial and institutionalbuildings, where ventilation concerns usually dominate (though infiltration shouldnot be ignored), and single- and multifamily residences, where infiltration hasalways been considered important but ventilation issues have received increasedattention in recent years. Basic concepts and terminology for both arepresented before more advanced analytical and design techniques are given.Ventilation of industrial buildings is covered in Chapter 31 of the 2019 ASHRAE Handbook—HVAC Applications.However, many of the fundamental ideas and terminology covered in this chaptercan also be applied to industrial buildings.
