This study attempted to minimize haloacetic acids (HAAs) and bromate using integrated treatment processesincluding electro-oxidation, biological filters, and ceramic/polymer membranes. Various oxidants including ozone, hydrogen peroxide, and the hydroxyl radical were formed in the electro-oxidation process. These oxidants were then used for the oxidation of natural organic matter (NOM) prior to membrane filtration. The effects of electrolytes (NaCl, Na2SO2, and Na2CO3) and pH on the formationof different oxidants were evaluated, along with various hydraulic retention times. Rigorous NOM characterizations were performed after each process in terms of molecular size, structure, and functionality, along with NOM removal as determined by dissolved organic carbon and ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm. Membrane processes were introduced for water treated by electro-oxidation to remove remaining NOM as well as bromate and chlorinated disinfection byproducts such as HAAs.
