This article deals with the occurrence of fungi, both filamentous and yeast, in five small municipal water distribution systems. Of a total of 207 samples, 103 (49.8 percent) were positive for fungi. Counts ranged between 1 and 6 colony forming units (cfu) per 50-mL sample. The average count per positive sample was 5.5 cfu, with residential taps in the different systems averaging between 1.3 and 1.9 cfu. Highest average counts were observed in the raw water (11.0 cfu per sample), storage tank water (20.0 cfu per sample), and fire hydrant water (5.8 cfu per sample). Chlorination in the range of 1.0 and 2.0 mg per L inactivates most of the fungal propagules. Fifty-eight percent of the isolates were from four genera: Alternaria, Aspergillus, Cladosporium, and Penicillium. No significant correlations were found between the presence of fungi and various physiochemical and bacteriological parameters. Includes 20 references, tables.
