Full Description

This paper describes the pilot work undertaken by EPCOR Water Services Inc. in 2001 in the application of epoxy lining to cast iron water mains in Edmonton. The project began with analysis of the impact of the selected lining material on water quality by performing tests on samples in the water quality laboratory. This testing was followed by analysis of water from customer's taps before the project to establish a baseline of water quality within the water distribution system. Upon completion of installation of the lining, water quality in the main was monitored prior to returning the pipe to service to ensure that the lining caused no adverse impact on the quality of water. Hydraulic performance testing of the water mains was also undertaken before and after the project. The goal of this testing was to ascertain if the new lining had an impact on the hydraulic performance of the pipe and the associated ability of the system to deliver adequate quantities of water for fire protection. Customer service throughout the pilot project was another key project consideration, particularly in the area of service interruption and construction activity notification.
