About This Item

Full Description

The Town of Littleton has chosen a unique combination of treatment processes to reduce elevated levels of iron and manganese in one of their groundwater sources. A pilot test program identified an innovative technology, which relies on the combination of ozonation and ultrafiltration, to reduce iron and managanese to acceptable levels in the treated water. This well has been shown by 3-dimensional modeling to be under the influence of the nearby pond. This combination of processes will also help satisfy possible future regulations under the Safe Drinking Water Act. The treatment facility was put on-line in the summer of 1998 and is able to treat up to 99.5% of the well water pumped to the facility. Less than 0.5% of the water is rejected in the treatment process as a result of the utilization of a secondary ultrafiltration system to concentrate backwash water from the primary ultrafiltration system.
