Full Description

This paper presents CFD results of a qualitative mixing analysis of standpipes with various inlet configurations, inlet momentum, and temperature differentials to illustrate the impact of buoyant jets on the mixing processes within standpipes. The standpipe being analyzed is a 1.5MG tank, 53 feet in diameter with a maximum water depth of 94 feet. Simulated tracer distributions are shown to illustrate the movement of fresh water being introduced into the standpipe under these variant conditions. A case study of a 1.3MG standpipe in Dennis, Massachusetts is presented. Temperature data was collected in 2000 and 2001, before and after an inlet/outlet pipe modification. The data illustrates the existence of thermal stratification and its elimination after the piping modification. Includes 3 references, table, figures.
