Full Description

This paper compares the indoor air quality requirements of ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 170-2013 Ventilation for Healthcare Facilities(S170) to the requirements of ANSI/ASHRAE/ASHE Standard 62.1-2013 Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality (S62). S62, based on its multiple references in in OSHA, NIOSH, and EPA literature for all occupancies, is considered the principal industry standard for indoor air quality (IAQ). It is a "standard of care". Health care facilities are typically regulated by codes or authorities adopting a version of S170 (or its predecessor versions by the Facilities Guidelines Institute (FGI). However, S62 and S170 are somewhat dissimilar in their scope and requirements. In this paper, the body text of S62 is analyzed for requirement categories. Those categories are compared to requirements in S170. The categories discussed include the following: Scope, Application, Administration and Compliance; Intake outside air quality; Construction quality assurance, accessibility, and maintenance; Air contamination and recirculation; System outside air design; Variations in indoor conditions, Variable load conditions; Zone OA determination; Alternative design approaches; Performance approaches to ventilation design. The paper gives recommendations in each category to encourage greater alignment between the two standards.
