Full Description

This paper is an overview of the smoke control provisions of Section 909 of the 2000 International Building Code (IBC). The IBC allows third-party testing/commissioning and third-party assistance in review of design aspects. A rational analysis in accordance with well-established engineering principles is specifically required. This analysis must include “sufficient information and detail” to demonstrate compliance with the code. The code has requirements for the tightness of smoke barriers. Smoke control can be achieved by the pressurization method, the airflow method, or the exhaust method. The IBC has specific requirements for the minimum size of a design fire.
