Full Description

Scope

This standard defines the logical interface for interconnecting two different buses based on Futurebus+ and VME64 in a tightly coupled configuration. Such an interconnecting interface is called a Bridge. Interface between the Bridge and each of the buses is defined in accordance with the standard for the respective bus.

Purpose

The following goals were established for the Bridge:a) Allow Futurebus+ and VME64 systems to coexist in a multiple bus-based system environment; b) Allow modules on one bus to access resources on another bus, as if those resources resided locally; c) Shield details of one bus from the other for transparent operations; d) Allow for a variety of physical implementations; e) Allow Bridge implementors latitude for optimization of performance, functionality, and cost trade-off.

Abstract

New IEEE Standard - Inactive-Withdrawn. Withdrawn Standard. Withdrawn Date: May 01, 2000. The logical protocol layer for bridging between a Futurebus+ system and a VME64 system in a tightly coupled fashion is defined. Transferring of both data and events is specified. The physical layer is not defined in this standard. Implementors are free to define and use the Bridge in the manner that best fits the application for optimum performance, functionality, and cost trade-offs. The Bridge provides for software transparency such that, at the application level, software is not aware of accesses that reach across a Bridge into the modules of another bus.
