The requirements in Part I of this Standard apply to enclosed capacitors with integral protection intended t o reduce the risk of rupture and venting of the capacitor enclosure under internal fault conditions. These requirements apply to oil-filled capacitors rated 5 kilovolts or less, and dry-type capacitors rated 2 kilovolts or less that are intended for use with appliances, lighting equipment, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, motors, and the like, that comply with the requirements for such appliances and equipment.

The requirements in Part II of this Standard apply to general-use power-factor-correction units rated 600 volts maximum, intended for power-factor correction of circuits in accordance with the N ational Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70-1993.

A capacitor that complies with the requirements in Part I of this standard is intended to be mounted within an appliance or within equipment for which an acceptable outer enclosure is provided.

The requirements in Part I and Part II do not apply to capacitors covered by the Standard for Across-the-Line, Antenna Coupling, and Line-by-Pass Capacitors for Radio- and Television-Type Appliances, UL 1414.

Other types of capacitors may be investigated to establish compliance with these requirements, and with such additional test criteria as may be found necessary.

A product that contains features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems new or different from those in use when the Standard was developed, and that involves a risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons, shall be evaluated using the appropriate additional component and end-product requirements as determined necessary to mai ntain the level of safety for the user of the product as originally anticipated by the intent of this Standard.
