UL 1004-5 is intended to be read together with the Standard for Rotating Electrical Machines - General Requirements, UL 1004-1. The requirements in this Standard supplement or amend the requirements in UL 1004-1. The requirements of UL 1004-1 apply unless modified by this Standard.

This Standard covers Design B polyphase motors, as defined in NEMA MG 1, Motors and Generators, rated 500 horsepower (373 kW) or less, 600 volts or less, that are intended for use in accordance with NFPA 20, the Standard for the Installation of Centrifugal Fire Pumps.

This Standard does not cover the fire pump controller. These controllers are covered by the Standard for Fire Pump Controllers, UL 218.

These requirements do not cover motors intended for use in hazardous locations as defined in the National Electrical Code®, NFPA 70.
