Preface

This is the second edition of Z259.2.2, Self-retracting devices. It supersedes the previous edition published in 1998.

The purpose of this Standard is to specify requirements for the classification, design, testing and marking, and instructions for use with self-retracting devices.

Changes to this edition include the following:

a) The title of the Standard has changed from Self-retracting devices for personal fall-arrest systems to self-retracting devices.

b) New classifications for self-retracting devices

c) Revised provisions for qualification testing, design, and revalidation of self-retracting devices.

Scope

1.1
This Standard specifies the requirements for all self-retracting devices (SRDs) used as connecting components in fall protection systems. SRDs are further classified in this Standard according to method of use.

1.2
The equipment specified in this Standard is intended for users at risk of falls from height while at work.

1.3
This Standard outlines requirements for labeling products and providing instructions for use that will inform the user of performance limitations, inspection, maintenance, and hazards associated with misuse.

1.4
Some self-retracting devices for personal fall-arrest systems incorporate a means of worker retrieval following a fall-arrest incident.

1.5
In this Standard, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the standard.

Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material.

Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements.

Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (nonmandatory) to define their application.

1.6
The values given in SI (metric) units are the standard. The values given in parentheses are approximate and are for information only. Where a tolerance or a limit is not otherwise provided, values given shall have a tolerance of ±2%.
