Full Description

This paper examines an alternative concept for meeting new regulatory challenges for disinfection byproduct control that uses a magnetized ion exchange (MIEX) process consisting essentially of removing the natural organic matter (NOM) that reacts to form disinfection byproducts. Testing was performed at four locations around the country that allowed assessment of process performance under widely differing conditions. Evaluations indicated a distinct trend of NOM removal depending on the nature of the NOM in the source water as determined by specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA), molecular weight fractionations, and fractionations to characterize the distribution of hydrophobic, transphilic, and hydrophilic components.
