The Iron and Steel Society is the administrator of the many AISI alloy specifications. These specs are defined within the ISS Steel Products Manuals. Eleven different comprehensive manuals cover virtually every type of steel including plates, coated and uncoated products, wire, strip, railway materials, tubular goods and many more. The information contained in the manuals represents the significant manufacturing practices and related scientific and technical information of the many steel producers. These practices have evolved from the utilization of available raw materials and manufacturing methods to produce steel products to meet the requirements of purchasers' specifications and standards.

Relevant AISI specs are defined in the appropriate Steel Products Manuals. For instance, AISI 316 (stainless steel) is defined in the manual 222, Stainless and Heat Resisting Steels.
